1 CLIMATE & POPULATION DISTRIBUTION IN ASIA
SS7G11: The student will explain the impact of location, climate, physical characteristics, distribution of natural resources, and population distribution on Asia

2 INDIA’s Climate India has many types of climates:
Snow and ice in the mountains Hot dry plains in the central plateau Steamy tropical weather along the coast

3 INDIA Continued… The climate is shaped by seasonal winds that bring heavy rain called monsoons; monsoons bring much needed rain but sometimes they bring destructive flooding.

4 Where do people in India live?
Most people in India rely on farming so most of the people live along the great rivers and in the fertile river valleys

5 INDIA India is separated from the rest of Asia by three mountain ranges Because of the separation by the mountains, India is called a subcontinent (a division of a continent) The mountains have often protected India from northern invaders Most Indians live in the Ganges River Valley which provides fertile soil for farming

6 CHINA’s Climate China also has a variety of climates:
Hot and dry deserts Humid and tropical in the eastern and southern areas Mild temperatures in the north

7 Where do the people of China live?
Most of China’s one billion people live in the areas that have mild climates.

8 JAPAN Japan is an island nation on the far eastern edge of Asia.
Japan’s climate is affected by ocean currents. Currents coming from the south bring warm water to the southern and eastern coasts of Japan Currents coming from the north cool the northern coast of Japan

9 JAPAN Almost 80% of Japan is covered in mountains
Farmland is created from the mountains by building farming terraces along the slopes Japan depends on fishing and imported food because of so little farmland

10 Earthquakes in Japan Japan has many volcanoes which often cause earthquakes Japan has more earthquakes each year than any other place in the world!!

11 North KOREA the land is mountainous and the climate is cool
most live along the western half of the country where there are fewer mountains and more farmland

12 South Korea has a mix of mountains and river valleys and mild temperatures Excellent farmland and a greater population than North Korea; 25% of the people live in and around the capital city of Seoul Living in or near Seoul provides markets, jobs, and education

13 VIETNAM climate is warm & tropical
rich farmlands; 90% of the world’s rice is grown here

14 Asia’s Natural Resources
Natural resource – something found in the environment that people need and can use Examples – fresh water, trees, rich soil, minerals, coal, and oil One of the most valuable natural resources the this part of the world (Asia) is rich farmland
