1
Nutrient balance for nitrogen TAPAS action – Statistics Belgium in collaboration with the Institute for Agriculture and Fisheries Research 11 June Kathleen Gybels
2
Content Point of departure and objectives
Gross N balance: in- and output factors Gross N balance: data sources and methodology N balance at NUTS 3 Results of N balance in Belgium Conclusion
3
Point of departure and objectives
ILVO results presented in this report < (Vervaet et al, 2006) Flemish Region Walloon Region Brussels C-Region NUTS 1 NUTS 3 NUTS 1 = NUTS 3 this TAPAS project Belgium = Flemish Region + Walloon Region + Brussels C-Region
4
Gross nutrient balance: in- and output factors
Other organic fertilizers Biological N fixation Animal N production Inorganic Ammonia emission SOIL SURPLUS Crop removal Nutrient metabolism in agricultural soil Seeds and planting material Atmospheric N deposition
5
Gross N balance: data sources and methodology
Main data source: FSS-data (livestock numbers and crop areas) data available for the three regions data at farm level→ can be aggregated at NUTS 1 and NUTS 3 use of ‘generic’ classification codes as a solution for frequently changing codification
6
Gross N balance: data sources and methodology
Other data sources: regional institutes, organizations & manure legislation different definitions f.e. livestock N excretion coefficients FL: without N losses WAL: takes N losses into account different units f.e. livestock N excretion coefficients FL: kg N per average present animal WAL: kg N per stable place different formats f.e. WAL: atmospheric N deposition data in grid 5x5km FL: atmospheric N deposition rates per municipality
7
N balance at NUTS 3 Coefficients at NUTS 3: often same values as for the regional level f.e. crop production (kg dry matter per ha per crop type) Statistical discrepancy between NUTS 1 and NUTS 3 Dynamic databases: different date of extraction of the data f.e. Manure Bank NUTS 1: published in annual report NUTS 3: personal communication Different data sources at NUTS 1 and NUTS 3 Data at NUTS 1 are often more reliable Less data available at NUTS 3
8
N balance at NUTS 3: availability of data
FL NUTS 3 WAL NUTS 3 Livestock N production Inorganic fertilizer use Other fertilizers / Atmospheric N deposition 2006 1990, 1996, 2000, 2004 Seed use Biological N fixation Manure export, import and processing Crop removal Ammonia emission
9
Results N input factors in Belgium
10
Results: soil surplus in Belgium 1990 -2006
11
Livestock N production at NUTS 3 in 2006
12
Inorganic fertilizer use at NUTS 3 in 2006
13
Conclusion N balance at NUTS 1:
Refinement of Flemish gross N balance (TAPAS 2004) Calculation of Walloon gross N balance (Walloon manure import, export, processing are lacking) Estimation of N balance of Brussels Capital-Region Belgian N balance = Flanders + Walloon Region + Brussels Capital-Region N balance at NUTS 3: A first attempt to gather the necessary data and coefficients FL: most data available from 2000 until 2006 WAL: some data not available for this project
