Evaluation Question 3

Distribution For our (Manci, Dalaksaline and I) film ‘The Girl Before…’, we were funded by Vertigo Films – an independent small company. The budget we had for our film was very low, as the scale of production was really small. A film distributor is responsible for the release and the marketing of the film. A lot of the time, the distribution company is different from the production company. It is an important stage in the creation of a media product.

Marketing To market our film, we decided we would distribute it directly and put it online for example on YouTube. YouTube is a huge platform and uploading our media product on there would be free of cost. We could also promote our film on our social media networks and on our blog. The social media networks (e.g. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat) and our blogs (Wordpress) are free to run therefore we would not need to spend any money at all on our marketing.

Exhibition Vertigo Films is a UK media company which creates and distributes commercially driven independent media products. We also had the idea of presenting our film to smaller audiences at first to see what they think of it – and try to sell our film for their studies of media. This would be a good way to get people to start talking about our film and spread the word.

AUDIENCE As the genre of our film is psychological thriller, we found out through research that many other films of the same genre are targeted towards adults – many have age ratings of 18+. However, we decided that our film was suitable for younger audiences due to keeping anything scary to a bare minimum, and so we decided on making our film a 12A. We decided on this after conducting further research of other psychological thrillers, and not being able to find many successful ones that were below 15+ or 18+ age ratings. We thought by making our film 12A perhaps it could attract a bigger audience due to not many young teenagers being able to watch others.

Funding The funding we had for our film was very small. As we had a low scale of production, our budget was also extremely low. We kept the budget below £250,000, similar to an independent film called ‘Containment’. This meant we mostly had to use our own resources, props and costumes as we could not benefit from high end production and distribution companies – Hollywood companies - such as Universal, or else we would’ve had the risk of making a loss rather than a profit which is not something that would be beneficial towards us.

Production The production company used to create our film is called ‘MOD Productions’, which is our own company belonging to Manci, Dalaksaline and I. The name represents our initials (O standing for my name, Ola). We chose to have our own production company as we did not have enough funding to use another our production was on small scale) and so we did most of the production ourselves; the filming and putting it all together from the pre-production process to the post-production process.
