3. What is causing the problems on Earth?
It is estimated that the total number of humans living on Earth is 7.5 billion.
In 1990 there were 5 billion
In 2007 there were 6.5 billion.
All these people need food, homes, fuels etc

5. Global warming What is it? An increase in the earth’s temperature
Causes:
The green house effect…
CO2: Deforestation, growing population
Methane: Mining activities, food production
Nitrogen Oxides: Burning fossil fuels, fertilisers.
CFCs: Fridges, air conditioning, aerosols.
Effects:
Changes to weather patterns e.g. storms, drought, floods

6. Deforestation What it is?
Cutting down large areas of woodland (rain forest).
Causes:
Logging- wood is used for construction and furniture
Land is cleared to build houses or roads (infrastructure)
Land is cleared for agriculture, producing food for the growing population. Cattle grazing, plants, palm oil)
Effects:
Reduced biodiversity, Medicine, more CO2, soil erosion and flooding,

7. Over harvesting What is it?
Involves hunting/harvesting a food source until it is at risk of extinction e.g. fishing.
Cause:
Growing population
Demands for cheaper food
Commercial fishing techniques (trawling, drift nets)
Effects
Fish stocks in the worlds oceans have fallen dramatically. (1970s 250,000 tonnes to ,000 tonnes)
Food chains are effected therefore no future fish
Balance of the ecosystem

8. Acid Rain What it is? Acid which has a pH of 4 (less than 7) Causes:
Burning fossil fuels (coal, oil & gas) releases a mixture of gases.
Sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxides mix with the rain clouds in the atmosphere to make acid rain
Effects:
Forests: slows growth, removes nutrients from the soil, damages leaves preventing photosynthesis.
Lakes & rivers: washes nutrients from the soil into rivers and streams, lowering the pH and effecting the animals and plants.
Corrosion of buildings.

What is it?
Destroying the natural habitat of animals and plants
Cause:
Growing population
Increased demand for housing, roads (infrastructure), food, electricity, fuel.
Effects
Reduced habitats for native animals and plants
Reduced biodiversity
More animals becoming endangered and risk extinction

There are two types: Tabloid and Broadsheet.
Choose which type of newspaper your news report will appear in.
