Archaea

Definition Archaea- Unicellular microorganisms which are genetically distinct from bacteria and eukaryotes.

Discovery In 1977, Carl Woese overturned a new Prokaryotic organism
because of his work, archaea was classified as the third division of living things.

Discovery The new domain chart:

Discovery The term Archaea comes from the Greek word meaning “ancient.” They are also said to be more closely related to eukaryotes (including humans) than to bacteria.

Where are they found? Extremely hot temperatures (above 100°C)
Extremely cold temperatures (below -10°C) Unusually salty habitats Acidic conditions

Where are they found? In you!

Where are they found? Archaea are also found in the human gut!
However, they are very limited compared to the amounts of bacteria.

Structure The three primary regions of an archaea cell are the cytoplasm, cell membrane, and cell wall.

Structure Archaea cell membranes are chemically different from all other living things, including a "backwards" glycerol molecule and isoprene derivatives in place of fatty acids.

Reproduction Having no cell nucleus, Archaea do not reproduce via mitosis. they procreate using a process called binary fission.

Reproduction In this binary fission process, Archaeal DNA replicates, and the two strands are pulled apart as the cell grows.
