2 Question What’s happening while you read?
Search for reasons behind events and characters’ feelings. Write down anything that is confusing. If you can’t answer the questions, reread and look for the answer in the text Guiding Questions Explain why the character made the decision he/she did? How do the events of the story affect each character’s feelings and the traits he/she displays? Resource C

3 Predict/Infer Guiding Questions
Make an educated guess about how the selection will continue. Read further to confirm or disprove your prediction. Try to figure out things the author does not say directly. Guiding Questions Based on what has happened so far in the story, predict what will happen next. Predict how the character will react to this situation. Support your response with information you already know about the character. Resource C

5 Monitor/Clarify Guiding Questions Understanding/Comprehension
Stop reading occasionally to review what you understand so far. Reread, read ahead, or look at pictures to help. Look for answers to questions you had earlier Vocabulary • Use clues in the word’s context, the words and the sentences surrounding it • Break the unknown word into parts • Think about meanings of similar words you already know Guiding Questions What does that word/phrase mean? If it has two meanings, what meaning did the author intend? What choices have the characters made so far and how have these choices affected the events of the story? Resource C

6 Summarize Guiding Questions
Briefly tell the main ideas of the piece in your own words Condense the writer’s ideas into precise statements Leave out unimportant details Guiding Questions • In your own words, tell what the selection was about. Summarize the story. What was the selection mainly about? Resource C
