1 Reserve Affiliation and Reserve Component Counselors
ELEMENT 02

2 Purpose To inform transitioning service members (TSM’s) of service affiliation options and obligations For most enlistees, if this is members first initial enlistment, he/she must serve a total of eight years per Military Service Obligation (MSO). Any part of that service not served on active duty must be served in a reserve component unless he / she is discharged sooner Member must serve obligation by becoming a member of the Ready Reserve in one of the following categories: Selected Reserve (SELRES) Individual Ready Reserve (IRR) Retired Reserve is available to sailors who have completed twenty or more years of Active Duty service

3 Why is the Navy Reserve Force Important?
Support to the fleet – provides Navy with sailors who are ready + fully integrated Full-time partner with Navy active duty component Augment active duty throughout full range of operations during peacetime

4 Reserve Affiliation Benefits
2-Year involuntary Mobilization Deferment TAMP Medical Benefits Financial Incentives (affiliation bonus) Reserve Retirement Reduced Medical Screening Life and Long-term Care Insurance (SGLI/FSGLI) Post 9/11 GI-Bill Transferability to Eligible Dependents Education Resources (Navy COOL/DANTES/REAP, etc) Reserve Survivors Benefits Plan ID, Commissary + Base Access

5 SELECTED RESERVE (SELRES)
Members may voluntarily affiliate with SELRES SELRES is the largest and most relied upon of the Ready Reserve May be recalled to active duty in time of war or national emergency Reservists may also be ordered to active duty involuntarily for up to 270 days for any single contingency operation “without” a declaration of national emergency Usually train to a minimum of one weekend a month and two weeks of annual training per year Full-time Support members perform active duty service that relates to the training and administration of the Navy Reserve program. Receive same pay, allowances and benefits as Active Duty members

6 INDIVIDUAL READY RESERVE (IRR)
The Individual Ready Reserve consists mainly of individuals who have had training and who have served previously in the active component. Other IRR members come from the Selected Reserve and have some of their military obligation remaining IRR members may be voluntarily recalled upon declaration of a national emergency Participant requirements may include an annual day of muster duty to satisfy statutory screening requirements IRR members may participate in voluntary tours of active duty and military professional development education programs.

7 THE WAY AHEAD….. If you’re an Active Duty Sailors within 13 months of EAOS,…. Your Career Counselor can assist your transition to the Navy Reserve via Career Navigator (to include C-WAY). If granted a reenlistment quota, you must select a drill site from CMS-ID. During your assignment you can expect to be contact by a member of the Career Transition Office (CTO). The mission of the CTO is the facilitate your smooth and timely transition to the Reserves. For Sailors interested in Full Time-Support opportunities, contact the active duty ECM responsible for the rating for which you have interest after consulting your chain on command
