3. There are four characteristics associated with muscle tissue:
Excitability
Contractility
Extensibility
Elasticity
- Tissue can receive & respond to stimulation
- Tissue can shorten & thicken
- Tissue can lengthen
- After contracting or lengthening, tissue always wants to return to its resting state

4. The characteristics of muscle tissue enable it to perform some important functions, including:
Movement – both voluntary & involuntary
Maintaining posture
Stabilize joint by exerting tension
Maintaining body temperature

5. Types of muscle tissue:
Cardiac – myocardium of the heart (involuntary)
Skeletal – attached to bone (voluntary)
Smooth (Visceral) – organs/blood vessels (involuntary)

6. Skeletal muscle movements
Flexion- reduces angle of the joint from anatomical position.
Extension- movement that returns you to anatomical position.
Hyperextension- extension beyond anatomical position.
Dorsiflexion- lift up toes.
Plantarflexion- move toes down.
Inversion- sole of foot points inward.
Eversion- sole of foot points outward.
Abduction- move body part away from midline.
Adduction- move body part toward midline.
Pronation- rotate inward.
Supination- rotate outward.
Rotation- movement around the central axis.
