4 Spanish rule? The Inca invaded by Pizarro
Lima, Peru was the center of Spanish control Independence movements: Early 1800s Simon Bolivar: Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, and Bolivia Jose de San Martin: Argentina, Chile, and Peru Distance made unity difficult Could not work together towards common goals Continent populated around edges, mountains and rainforests limiting interaction Underdevelopment and political instability

5 Governments? Oligarchy (government by the few) and military rule
Authoritarian rule (stresses obedience to authority over freedom) delayed democracy Although freedom gained in 1800s, colonialism still had effects Strong militaries Underdeveloped economies Social class divisions

Literature Gabriel Garcia Marquez (famous author) Music Pop & Folk music is very popular Arts and Crafts Handmade items decorated with religious symbols Use many instruments (marimbas, maracas, flutes, etc) Pottery, textiles, glasswork and metal work Decorated with folk religious symbols Ponchos made from wool of llamas and alpacas

7 Economy? Each region is known for different economic trades
Large gap between rich and poor Shows failure to develop after independence Chile is greatest economic success Trades goods to foreign nations Mercosur- An economic market in the southern cone of South America (1995) Certain regions known for mining, fishing or grains

8 Future and education? Spanish-speaking South America has higher literacy rates than other countries in Latin America High importance put on education to improve economic success Support given to colleges, universities, and technical schools Many SA countries support schools past high school Chile is a leader in education and literacy

9 Classwork Work in your groups to complete the outline for Chapter 10 Section 3 Pages When you are finished, you may turn in your work and get a South America map Color in the countries which are part of SPANISH Speaking South America (use slide 2 for help) LABEL each country with its name!
