Alison Borthwick & Charlie Gilderdale NRICH Team

2 Make 37 poster (7205) NB remind delegates about id numbers Have a go
Have a second go

3 Aims of the Project To strengthen mathematics teaching and learning during the key transition years in primary and secondary education To establish and support a local network of schools to explore effective teaching and learning of fluency, reasoning and problem solving

4 Overview of the Three Days
Supporting the three aims: Day 1: Fluency Day 2: Reasoning Day 3: Problem Solving

5 Mathematical Proficiency (11796)
Our vision, reminder…

6 Gap Task You were asked to try Reach 100 with your class.
Discuss and share

7 Break

8 Coded Hundred Square (6554)

9 Discussion How did you find the activity? Did anything surprise you?
How would you use this task in the classroom? How does this task support reasoning?

10 NRICH 5 stages Describe Explain Convince Justify Prove

11 Reasoning is one of the NC aims
Children need to reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language. (DfE, 2013).

12 Lunch

13 Sealed Solution (1177)

14 What’s it Worth?(1053) Aim: delegates now have a clear understanding of the strands and also the idea of building in depth into one task. Draw this idea out as well.

15 Discussion How did you find the activity? Did anything surprise you?
How would you use this task in the classroom? How does this task support reasoning?

16 Examples of students work
What do you notice?

17 Key Messages How good at reasoning are your pupils?
Which elements of reasoning do they exhibit? How can we ensure consistency of reasoning as children’s learning progresses?

18 Factors and Multiples Puzzle (5448)
NB remind delegates about id numbers Have a go Have a second go

19 Mathematical Proficiency (11796)
Our vision, reminder…

20 Gap Task Try the task Sealed Solution with your students.
Think about using a “Graffiti Maths” approach. Bring examples of their work to Day 3.

21 Funding Opportunity EEF (Education Endowment Fund)
Developing a network of Research Schools Next deadline: 5pm, 11th December Focus: Maths at KS2/3 - transition

22 Thank you
