Primary 5 Miss McQueen Class Newsletter Term 3: January – March 2018
We are all settling in well to the new term and excited for the learning and challenges we have ahead of us. We are particularly looking forward to our term focus of SPACE! Literacy: Listening and Talking We are all busy learning Scots poems ready for reciting in class on Monday 29th January. Even Miss McQueen is giving it a go. Reading As well as reading books being read in small groups in class and at home, we will be continuing working on our comprehension skills and some groups will begin to work on literacy circles. Writing We are going to write imaginative stories and enter the BBC Radio Words competition. We are already eager to begin the writing process. We will also be writing diary entries from the point of view of an astronaut on the International Space Station and creating newspaper articles about some key space travel events. IDL: Our focus this term is Space. We will be learning about the solar system and the characteristics of each planet. We will create a timeline of space travel and find out about Tim Peake and his mission to the International Space Station. We will also find out about the different moon phases in the lunar month. We will spend some time researching jobs involved in space exploration too. Maths: This term we are having a big focus on mental maths and problem solving too. We will be working on 2D and 3D shape. We will be learning about fractions, decimals and percentages and will keep working on our multiplication tables in class and at home. Health and Wellbeing: This term we will be learning about food hygiene including contamination, use by and best before dates and how to store food safely. Later in the term we will look at food journeys and investigate where some of our food comes from. We hope to end the term by preparing and cooking some meals we have calculated the food miles for. We will also look in to Fair Trade during Fair Trade Fortnight. PE: Our PE days are a Monday and Friday. Please ensure your child has a PE kit in school for these days. All jewellery must be removed and long hair tied back. This term we have a focus on Scottish Country Dancing and Fitness. Art: Could all pupils please bring in an old (large) t.shirt or shirt to use as an art apron to protect their clothes. Homework: Homework will be in the form of a grid full of choices to go alongside the weekly tasks of reading, spelling and maths. Reading is given separately via a bookmark, please ensure your child brings their reading book to school each day.
