Succession The regular pattern of change over time in an ecosystem

Pioneers – first organisms in an area
ex: lichens

Climax Community – final, stable community that forms if an area is left undisturbed
Ex: biomes

Terrestrial Succession

Types of Succession Primary Succession – occurs where no ecosystem existed previously (on new volcanic islands, where glaciers retreat, etc.) Secondary Succession – occurs where an ecosystem has previously been (after forest fires, floods, etc.)

Aquatic Succession Ecosystem changes from a lake or pond to a forest over time Sediment from erosion and decomposition slowly accumulates in lakes – they become more shallow
