2 What are they? A noun is a person, place, thing, or idea (democracy, creativity, etc.) Each noun has three classifications

3 Common vs. Proper Common nouns refer to general people, places, things, or ideas Not capitalized (lake, museum month, etc) Exception-Beginning of a sentence Guitarists love to play in the park Proper nouns refer to particular people, places, things, or ideas Always capitalized

4 Concrete vs. Abstract Concrete nouns are an object that can be touched, seen, smelled, heard, or tasted Ex. book, flower, sand, etc Abstract nouns describe an idea, quality, or state Ex. curiosity, pride, sadness, etc.

5 Singular vs. Plural Singular nouns refer to one thing
Plural nouns refer to many things There are several ways to make words plural we will discuss several later

6 Collective Nouns Refers to a group of people or things with one word
Ex. audience, family, crowd, team, jury

7 Compound Nouns Two or more words put together to make one word. There are three ways to make compound nouns. One Word: airplane, skateboard, & keyboard Separate Words: rain forest, parking lot, City Hall Hyphenated Words: mother-in-law, fade-out
