1 1/29 &1/ th Grade Agenda Learning Objective: Learn about homologous structures HW: Reading & Notetaking p. 119 – 121 Video: PBS Evolution Passback HW & Test Textboook Reading: p HW: Reading & Notetaking p Reminder Data Table, Graph & Procedures due 2/5 & 2/6 (15 Points)

2 Reflection Prompt: Write 3 facts about evolution

3 Reflection Prompt: Copy the procedures from the science fair boards in the back of the room.

4 Did humans evolve from chimpanzees?
NO Humans did not evolve from chimpanzees. Humans and chimpanzees are evolutionary cousins and share a recent common ancestor that was neither chimpanzee nor human. Humans are not "higher" or "more evolved" than other living lineages.

5 Comparison of Bonobos and Chimpanzees

6 Flores man was 3 feet tall
Lived in an Island in Indonesia 10,000 years ago Lived with Dwarf Elephants

7 Gigantopithecus was 10 feet tall
Lived in SouthEast Asia 100,000 years ago. Walked on all fours but can stand upright

8 The preserve remains or traces of an organism that lived in the past is called…
Fossil Most fossils form when organism that die become buried in sediments Remains of most animals never becomes fossil

9 How do fossils form?

10 Gradualism vs Punctuated Equilibria
Gradualism: The theory that evolution occurs slowly by steadily Punctuated Equilibria:Evolution occurs during short periods of rapid change separated by long periods of little or no change

11 What are homologous structures?
Similar structures that related species have inherited from a common ancestor

12 Similarities in Early Development

13 Human Embryos have tails and gill slits

14

15 Evolution Simulation
