2 After a costly war in France ended…
King could not afford to maintain La. New way to fund the colony—establish a proprietorship (giving an individual a charter to operate the colony as a business)

3 Rules: Proprietor given almost total control
In return, had to meet requirements: -had to send supplies & settlers to colony regularly -had to follow French law

4 1712 Antoine Crozat—proprietor
Expected to find gold & silver in the new colony Little interest in settlers or agriculture

5 New governor selected:
Antoine Cadillac Set up the Superior Council governing body First official to suggest growing indigo and tobacco He understood that good colonists were needed He tried to convince Crozat to send more people to La.

6 Cadillac Set up a trading post that later became Detroit, Michigan
Troubles started when he refused to smoke the calumet (peace pipe) with the Indians when he visited their villages People complained about his rude personality

7 Superior council Cadillac deserves credit for organizing the colony
He established the Superior Council to help govern the colony. This council was in charge of judicial matters and was presided over by a commissioner
