Jesus Comforts His Disciples
John 14:1 “Do not let your hearts be troubled” Though HIS heart is troubled, he wants them to understand that what is about to happen is part of the plan John 14:2-4 “In my Father’s house are many rooms…I am going there to prepare a place for you.” Last Supper
2
Jewish custom: A bridegroom would build a new room onto his father’s house. When he had finished, he would return for his bride and marry her then take her to live in his father’s house He is promising his disciples an engagement, a covenant that can’t be broken Last Supper

John 14:14 “You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it”
John 14:6 “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life” The name the first believers gave the church - Acts 24:14 – I admit that I worship the God of our fathers as a follower of the Way John 14:14 “You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it” We should follow Christ’s example of prayer when he says “not my will but yours” “Ask for: anything in his name” NOT “ask for anything, in his name” Last Supper
6
John 14:17 “I will ask the Father and he will give you another helper (advocate, counselor) to help you and be with you forever – the Spirit of Truth.” He lives with you and will be in you. Jesus promises that, even though he is going away, God will send his Spirit. His own Spirit to live in them Advocate/Counselor Last Supper
7
A person who gives advice (counsel)
One who supervises and watches over, like at a camp A lawyer: one who gives legal advice and manages cases for clients The Holy Spirit does all of these, but the original language is most like “lawyer.” He is our defense attorney. Last Supper
8
John 14:27 “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give you”
Hebrew word for peace is Shalom Shalom means more than peace. It means wholeness and restoration, a return to the way things were meant to be Shalom was used as a greeting when Jewish people met and when they left each other (Hello/Goodbye) They were wishing each other true peace Last Supper
9
“I do not give to you as the world gives”
He was not just saying “Shalom” as a wish for true peace. He was promising that true wholeness. Last Supper

Jesus’s Commands ***BEAR FRUIT***
Jesus physically showed them this command when he cursed the fig tree What is “Fruit?” The product of something Galatians 5:22-23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law John 15-17
11
Matthew 9:37-38 Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.” John 15-17
12
How do you bear fruit? Know his Word (Scripture) John 15:3
You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you John 15:7 If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish and it will be given to you John 15-17
13
Remain in Christ (Live dependently upon Christ)
John 15:5-6 I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. If anyone does not remain in me, he is like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. John 15-17
14
***LOVE EACH OTHER*** John 15:12-13 Matthew 22:37-39
My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends. Matthew 22:37-39 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself. John 15-17
15
1 Corinthians 13:4-7 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. John 15-17

Jesus Counsels/Warns the Disciples (so that they will not fall away)
The world will hate the disciples The world hated Jesus first They will be persecuted to the point of death Those who kill them will think they are doing a favor to the Lord (Paul) John 15-17
17
The Holy Spirit will be given after Jesus is gone
He will testify through them (15:26-27) He will teach them the things Jesus didn’t have time to say (16:12-15) John 15-17
18
The disciples will grieve but their grief will turn to joy
He is speaking of his death (grief) and resurrection (joy) He compares it to the pain of a woman giving birth but having the joy of a child, after John 15-17
19
Jesus’s Intercessory Prayer
Jesus prays for himself This prayer was said out loud for the disciples’ benefit They sensed his troubled heart and he was comforting them with his prayer Jesus requested to be glorified He asked to be glorified so that the Father would be glorified through him John 15-17
20
He asked to be glorified in the presence of the father
Glorify – to reveal or make clearer the goodness of God; to elevate He wanted God to get the credit for all the things Jesus did on earth He asked to be glorified in the presence of the father He wants to be restored to complete unity with the Father as it was in the beginning While he was fully human he could not be in complete unity with God because he was separated by flesh The sin of the world separated him further John 15-17
21
B. Jesus Prays for the Disciples
Jesus requested two things: Protection Jesus wanted his disciples to be protected from the world and from Satan (physical and spiritual) Sanctification (to be set apart; made holy) John 15-17
22
Jesus prayed for future believers
Jesus requested unity Unity with God Unity with one another Jesus knew that unity would be one of the most difficult things for believers in a community John 15-17
