Language Functions 1. offer There are a number of formulas used when offering help in English. Here are some of the most common: - May I help you? - Can I help you? - Are you looking for something? - Would you like some help? - Do you need some help? - What can I do for you today? Accepting the offer ; Yes, please. Refusing the offer ; No, thanks.

2. Suggestion - Why don't you/we go to the movies tonight? - Let's go to the travel agent's this afternoon to book our ticket. - What about asking your brother for help? - How about going to Hawaii for your vacation? - I suggest you/we take all the factors in consideration before we decide

3. Asking for Information
- Could you tell me...? - Do you know...? - I'd like to know... - I'm interested in... - I'm looking for..

4. Giving Advice With the "Should" Verb
- You should see a doctor. - I don't think you should work hard. - You had better work less.

5. Giving instructions - Open your books. - Insert the DVD into the drive. - Purchase your ticket online. But these imperatives should be more polite preceded by please , or followed by for me please.

6. Guessing - He might be busy today. - She must be at work if she's not at home. - Maybe she's got a new boyfriend!

7. Expressing Wishes I wish I had five million dollars! If I could choose, I'd buy the blue car. I'd like to have a steak, please.

8. Persuading - I think you'll find our product is the best you can buy. - Come on, let's go have some fun! What can it hurt? - If you give me a moment, I can explain why we should do this deal.

Structures Used when Asking for Permission in English: - May I + verb May I have another piece of pie? - Would you mind if I + verb in past Would you mind if I took a five minute break? Giving Permission - Sure - No problem. - Go right ahead. - Please feel free + infinitive
