2 Jimmy Carter’s appeal Honest, outsider, soft-spoken, down to earth Brought in out-side people which alienated Democrats in Washington

3 “Carter’s success” Camp David Accords – Carter was able to bring Egypt and Israel together to sign a peace agreement. This was his biggest achievement.

4 “Carter’s failures” – at home
Carter saw the need to reduce our dependency on oil Problems in the Middle East and OPEC raising prices, cause gas prices to shoot up Inflation rose to 14% by 1980 Interest rates rose to 22%

5 Carter’s failures – abroad
USSR – Carter signed the SALT II treaty with the Soviets. Critics claimed that it would put the U.S. at a military disadvantage. Carter gave up on the treaty when USSR invaded Afghanistan in Dec He also pushed the USSR on human rights with led to a breakdown in our relations. Panama – Carter gave the Panama Canal to the country of Panama. Some criticized him for this act but it did improve our relations in Latin American Iran – A revolt broke out in Iran in Jan. of The Ayatollah Khomeini came back to run the country. The shah – old leader – fled. When we allowed him to come to the U.S. for cancer treatment in Oct. 1979, armed students took over the U.S. embassy and took 52 American hostages. They were held for 444 days and made us look weak.
