1 2-6-18 Plate Boundaries Lab

2 Do Now: Take out your homework (“How do changes in density cause motion” lab worksheet) Silently read the procedures in the lab handout you have been given. Begin completing the lab safety form.

3 Lab: How do changes in density cause motion?
Describe each raisin’s motion. After bubbles attach to the raisins, they rise to the surface. When the raisins reach the surface, bubbles pop and the raisins fall back to the bottom of the container. How does the behavior of the raisin model compare to the motion in Earth’s mantle? The behavior of the raisins is similar to the behavior of material in Earth’s mantle. In the mantle, heat changes the buoyancy (the ability to float). In this experiment, the bubbles of carbonated liquid change the buoyancy.

4 Plate Tectonics Quiz Thursday, 2/8/18
What is the theory of plate tectonics? What are the three types of plate boundaries? Why do tectonic plates move?

5 Lab: Movement of Plate Boundaries Parts I & II
Question: What happens where two plates come together? Materials for Parts I & II: 1 dropper 1 beaker of water 1 tray with a piece of wax paper 2 graham crackers Follow procedures on handout and answer the associated questions on the next page. To gather materials, first fill up beaker with water and then bring back to seat. Then, pick up tray with paper, dropper, and graham crackers. Cleanup: Return tray with dropper and empty beaker Throw away wax paper You may eat the graham crackers or throw them away
