3 What human geographers study
Culture How things like religion, language and government vary across the world Development Standards of living and quality of life across the world Population How populations grow in different places and people migrate Urban Development Cities and built-up areas

4 The Five themes of geography
Because geography is such a broad and expansive subject it has been broken down into five simple themes The Five Themes of Geography are: Location Place Human Environment Interaction Movement Regions

5 The Five themes of geography: Location
Location is defined as a particular place or position There are two types of location Absolute: Defined by latitude and longitude or some form of exact address Example: Sardis Secondary’s location is Stevenson Road Relative Location: When describing an area in broad terms or in relation to another place Example: Sardis Secondary is about 2 minutes away from Tim Hortons

6 The Five themes of geography: Place
Place refers to the physical and human aspects of a location While location refers to a GPS where something is, place describes the area Characteristics make include the physical land features of the place, climate and weather, or human qualities such as quality Geographers use place to compare and contrast different locations

7 The Five themes of geography: Human Environment Interaction
More than any other species, humans and the environment impact each other immensely Humans depend on the environment in order to habituate in an area, farm, create clothing, hunt, and create cities Furthermore, humans have affected the environment in negative ways such as climate change, over pollution, and mass extinctions of animals The relationship between the two goes both ways and is crucial to the study of geography

8 The Five themes of geography: Movement
Movement refers predominately to the movement of humans Movement can be broken down into three main aspects The Movement of People Themselves: Immigration and Emigration The Movement of Goods: Trade and the Economy The Movement of Ideas and Thoughts

9 The Five themes of geography: Regions
A region is an area composed of places with unifying physical or human characteristics There are three types of regions Formal Region: A region whose boundaries are formally defined Functional Region: Usually encompasses a central point with defined boundaries and the affected areas around it Vernacular Region: When closely placed in the world have unifying characteristics, we tend to imagine these places bound by an “imaginary border”
