1 Reading Quiz 1.1 All ________ waves require a _________ through which to travel. Draw a picture of a transverse wave. Label the crest and trough. Draw a picture of a longitudinal wave. Label compressions and rarefactions.

2 What are Waves? Wave: a temporary disturbance that transfers energy from place to place.

3 2 types of waves (A) Mechanical waves: travel through a medium (matter). Ex. sound Electromagnetic waves: do not need a medium to travel through. Ex. light

4 What carries a mechanical wave?
Medium: the material a wave travels through

5 What causes mechanical waves?
Mechanical waves are produced when a source of energy causes a medium to vibrate. Although they travel through a medium, they do not carry the medium with them. What example is used in your book?

6 When a wave travels under the duck, the duck moves up and down
When a wave travels under the duck, the duck moves up and down. But the duck does not travel with the wave. After the wave passes, the duck and the water return to where they started. Why doesn’t the medium travel along with the wave?

7 2 types of Mechanical waves
1. Transverse: means across, the particles of the medium move at right angles (up & down) (Ex. water)

8 Transverse Waves (move up and down)
Crest: the highest point of a transverse wave Trough: the lowest point of a transverse wave

9 2 types of Mechanical waves
2. Longitudinal: move the medium parallel to the direction of the wave (back & forth) (Ex. sound)

10 Longitudinal Waves Compressions: parts of the wave close together
Rarefactions: parts of the wave spread out

11 Contrast transverse and longitudinal waves.
(A) The medium behaves differently. - particles vibrate perpendicular to the E in a transverse wave’ - particles vibrate parallel to the E in a longitudinal wave.

12 transverse trans: across verse: to turn

13 Exit Slip Define a mechanical wave.
Contrast transverse and longitudinal waves.
