2. Be Free Galatians 5:13-25 Main Idea:
The only way to live in freedom is to fight to live for God and others. The only way to win this fight is by the Spirit.

Vs 13 “For you were called to be free, brothers and sisters”
As Christians we are free but how should we live as free people?
Romans 6:1 - What should we say then? Should we continue in sin so that grace may multiply?

Vs 13 “For you were called to be free, brothers and sisters; only don’t use this freedom as an opportunity for the flesh”
Flesh = our sinful nature

Why is our freedom an opportunity for the flesh?
Because while free from the penalty of sin we are not yet free from the power or presence of sin
Justification – at salvation delivered from penalty of sin (past)
Sanctification – process of delivered from power of sin (present)
Glorification – in eternity delivered from presence of sin (future)

Why is our freedom an opportunity for the flesh?
Because we think that freedom means doing whatever we want?
Doing whatever we want brings forth sin aka. the works of the flesh (19-21)

John‬ ‭8:34-36‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬ - “Jesus responded, “Truly I tell you, everyone who commits sin is a slave of sin. A slave does not remain in the household forever, but a son does remain forever. So if the Son sets you free, you really will be free.” ‭‭

Matthew‬ ‭22:36-40‬ ‭- ‬‬‬‬‬‬““Teacher, which command in the law is the greatest?” He said to him, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and most important command. The second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself. All the Law and the Prophets depend on these two commands.”” ‭‭

We are in a battle to live as free people
We have an ally in this fight. The Holy Spirit ‭‭

The Holy Spirit dwells within the Christian aiding in the battle against our flesh/sinful nature

Vs 16 – “Walk by the Spirit” - Living in the power of the Spirit
Aware of the Spirit’s presence
Communicating with the Spirit
Pleading with the Spirit for help, power and guidance
Listening to the Spirit’s direction and conviction

Luke 9:23 - “If anyone wants to follow after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross daily, and follow me.
