1 Intro, Lab Safety, Sci Method Notes
Welcome to Chemsitry! Intro, Lab Safety, Sci Method Notes

2 What is Chemistry? The study of the composition of matter and the changes that matter undergoes Chemistry is often referred to as the central science because it joins physics, math, biology and medicine, and earth and environmental sciences Types of Chemistry Analytical Biochemical Inorganic Organic Physical

3 What we will be Studying
Lab Safety, Scientific Method Measurement Matter The Atom Nomenclature The Mole Chemical Reactions Stoichiometry Modern Atomic Theory Periodic Trends Bonding Gases Solutions Acids & Bases Chemical Energy

4 What should you expect This is an UPPER level science class. It will be different and more demanding than your physical science or biology classes. In class Questions of the Day, Notes, Practice, Labs, Writing Assignments Out of class Homework The only way to understand chemistry is to PRACTICE! Expect to have about minutes of homework about 3 times a week. I highly suggest forming study groups out of class &/OR joining my CATS Chem Review CLass

5 What should you expect Quizzes and Exams
There will NEVER be a pop quiz in this class Exams will be part multiple choice, part short answer (mostly short answer) Quizzes & Exams count for a large portion of your grade, and you cannot expect to do well if you do not prepare for exams!

6 Lab Write Ups For most labs, you will complete the lab write ups in class Once a quarter, you will be required to type/neatly handwrite a full lab report in paragraph form. Please remember on your lab scores, the conclusion and discussion questions will be worth signficantly more points

7 Extra Credit I don’t give it. The ways you can earn/make up credit:
Turning in homework and labs on time Doing well on exams If you do poorly on an exam, you can ALWAYS make up exams on a different test. It is up to YOU to schedule a retake Every once in a while, there will be an extra credit problem on the test, but the question won’t be labeled as extra credit

8 Grade Breakdown Semester: Quarter: Q1: 40% Q2: 40% Semester Exam: 20%
Exams/Quizzes: 60% Labs: 20% Homework: 15% Participation: 5%

9 What to expect If you are expecting to take this course as an “easy A” you may want to think again You will be held to a high standard of learning and effort. As long as you put the effort required into this challenging class, you will excel. You were placed in this class because you are CAPABLE of doing the work. If you feel you are misplaced, you must get my approval before guidance will switch your schedule.

10 What if I’m sick? You have as many days to get me your missing work to me as you were absent It is YOUR responsibility to get missing work from me If you miss a lab, you are not required to make it up, but are more than welcome to complete it if you want

11 Class website Or you can go to the classroom website: Here you access ALL class notes, labs, assignments (there are also links to PowerSchool & the BHS website There is also a calendar to help you keep track of what is for homework and big dates like tests There is also a place to view our class Twitter Feed

12 Class Twitter We have a class twitter feed….. #chemwithellis
We will be posting assignments here and it is also a place you can go to give/receive homework help from you peers! Get a Twitter Account! Use it! You can follow

13 What I need from you Student Survey filled out (on computer)
Student Parent Contract Lab fee: $10 Lab fees help us to have exciting labs for the year All fees go directly to purchasing materials we will use

14 Supplies you need for class:
REQUIRED DAILY: Chemistry Book can use class set, keep yours at home! 1-1.5” binder for assignments Spiral Notebook (for notes) Scientific Calculator (must have LOG function)
