Bush V Gore By: Anna Garufo & Emerson Wilhite Anna Garufo Emerson Wilhite

2 Background In 2000, a Florida Circuit Court demanded a recount for the Bush v Gore election after Gore wanted cities in Florida to recount the ballots after he lost the election. Gore wanted the recount because he thought that some votes weren’t properly counted and some weren’t counted at all.

3 Essential Question Did the FL Supreme Court violate the Equal Protection Clause of the U.S. Constitution and the duties of the electoral college by demanding a standardless recount?

4 Constitutional Principles
14th amendment- Naturalized citizens and people born in the United States shall get equal protection under the law. Article II Section I Clause 2- Established the Electoral College which allowed candidates to win presidency even if they lost the nationwide vote.

5 Outcome The U.S. Supreme Court’s decision was 7-2 that the Florida Supreme Courts decision violated the 14th amendment. This is because every vote should’ve been counted and the ballots should’ve been fixed if there was a problem with them.

6 What Was the Impact of This Case On Society
What Was the Impact of This Case On Society? Why Is This a Landmark Case? The case had a big impact on the election and society because nobody was paying much attention to every single persons’ vote. This is a landmark case because now votes are being counted ellectronically and people are making sure every single vote gets counted.
