3. The Battle of the Atlantic
Hitler tried to prevent America from sending aid to the Brits and the Russians
He ordered submarine raids along the American East coast
Sunk 87 U.S. ships in the first 4 months of 1942 …681 in the next 7 months

4. Convoys The allies sent lots of ships at once
But were escorted by destroyers
They had sonor to detect submarines
Were also aided by aircraft who used radar to detect subs on the surface
Big German losses

5. Ship Building in the U.S. increased tremendously
140 liberty ships built each month
By mid-1943 the tide had turned

6. The Eastern Front The Germans attacked Russia in 1941
Were stopped just short of Moscow by the winter
Continued the assult in the Spring
Germany was after Soviet oil fields in the Caucasus Mountains
And wanted to destroy Stalingrad

7. August 1942
The German Luftwaffe began to bomb Stalingrad to soften her up for invasion

8. The Soviets Brought in huge numbers of tanks to defend Stalingrad
Massive causalities on both sides
The Germans surrendered
Then supplies reached Russia from the U.S.
The Russians began the long march west

9. The North African Front
General Rommel (the Dessert Fox) and his Afrika Korps were a threat to the Suez Canal
U.S. and British forces commanded by
Eisenhower defeated Rommel in May of 1943
Was called Operation Overlord

10. Italy The Allies took Sicily in the summer of 1943
Mussolini was stripped of power by King Victor Emmanuel III
Then Mussolini and his wife were killed by Italian mobs

11. Hitler occupied Italy
The fighting in Italy between the Allies and the Germans lasted until 1945

12. Heroes The Tuskegee Airmen All Black squadron Fought in Italy
Earned 2 Distinguished Unit Citations
Also distinguished themselves when fighting the German Luftwaffe

Fought in Italy and North Africa

16. D-Day Operation Overlord Eisenhower
Amassed men, Weapons, etc. on the coast of England to prepare to cross the English Channel and invade France
June 6, 1944
Eventually 3 million men crossed the channel

First 3 divisions of paratroopers
Then by sea
First part of Saving Private Ryan
Brutal…especially at Omaha Beach

19. D-Day 7 days of fighting Allies held the beach
Within a month, 1 million troops had landed

Followed up with a massive air and land bombardment
Provided a gap in the German lines

And his Third Army were able to use the gap to advance
Within days American troops and the Free French liberated Paris
After 4 years of German occupation

22. By September of 1944
The allies had liberated all of France, Belgium and Luxumbourg

23. In the meantime was elected in 1944 for a fourth term
Harry Truman was FDR’s VP

24. The Battle of the Bulge Lasted for 5 weeks
The Allies were advancing in Germany
Hitler had one last offensive
German troops tried to drive through the center of Allied lines
They failed but managed to create a bulge in the center

25. Allied troops Continued east toward Berlin
Germans continued to be driven back
Remember…the Russians were driving west
The people in the camps were liberated as the allies advanced

26. By April 25th The Soviets took Berlin
German soldiers deserted or were shot on sight
Hitler and his new wife, Eva Braun were in a hidden bunker underground
They were married April 29th

27. Hitler and Eva Braun Committed suicide the following day
She took poison
He shot himself
Hitler left instructions for the disposal of their bodies
They were removed from the bunker and burned in the street

28. Hitler left a letter To the German people
He blamed the Jews for starting the war
He blamed his generals for losing the war

29. Eisenhower Accepted Germany’s unconditional surrender one week later
VE Day April 8, 1945
Harry Truman’s 61st Birthday
FDR had died in Georgia on April 12th
