The Battle of the Atlantic
Hitler tried to prevent America from sending aid to the Brits and the Russians He ordered submarine raids along the American East coast Sunk 87 U.S. ships in the first 4 months of 1942 …681 in the next 7 months

Convoys The allies sent lots of ships at once
But were escorted by destroyers They had sonor to detect submarines Were also aided by aircraft who used radar to detect subs on the surface Big German losses

Ship Building in the U.S. increased tremendously
140 liberty ships built each month By mid-1943 the tide had turned

The Eastern Front The Germans attacked Russia in 1941
Were stopped just short of Moscow by the winter Continued the assult in the Spring Germany was after Soviet oil fields in the Caucasus Mountains And wanted to destroy Stalingrad

August 1942 The German Luftwaffe began to bomb Stalingrad to soften her up for invasion

The Soviets Brought in huge numbers of tanks to defend Stalingrad
Massive causalities on both sides The Germans surrendered Then supplies reached Russia from the U.S. The Russians began the long march west

The Allies were advancing in Germany Hitler had one last offensive German troops tried to drive through the center of Allied lines They failed but managed to create a bulge in the center

Germans continued to be driven back Remember…the Russians were driving west The people in the camps were liberated as the allies advanced

By April 25th The Soviets took Berlin
German soldiers deserted or were shot on sight Hitler and his new wife, Eva Braun were in a hidden bunker underground They were married April 29th

Hitler and Eva Braun Committed suicide the following day
She took poison He shot himself Hitler left instructions for the disposal of their bodies They were removed from the bunker and burned in the street

Hitler left a letter To the German people
He blamed the Jews for starting the war He blamed his generals for losing the war

Eisenhower Accepted Germany’s unconditional surrender one week later
VE Day April 8, 1945 Harry Truman’s 61st Birthday FDR had died in Georgia on April 12th
