2 My History at PCSD PKMS: 2013 - Present Woodside/Hillcrest: 2012-2013
Oakside: Prior to that: Many jobs including writing for local newspapers and teaching English in Japan

3 My Philosophy of Teaching ENL
ENL class provides vocabulary support, background building and writing coaching ENL is a support class to help with ELA and Social Studies (and sometimes other classes) Little homework (mostly unfinished classwork, thinking about future work)

Speaking and Listening: 45% Reading and Writing: 45% Citizenship: 10%

6 ELL Identification and Exit Criteria
Identification (Entrance into ENL) Home Language Questionnaire Interview with Student New York State Identification Test for English Language Learners (NYSITELL) Exit from ENL (Grades 3 to 8) Score at the Commanding Level on the NYSESLAT Score at the Expanding level on the NYSESLAT and 3 or above on the New York State ELA assessment within the same school year.

7 ELL Levels ELL levels are determined by the NYSESLAT and the NYSITELL
Entering (Beginning): Emerging (Low Intermediate): Transitioning (Intermediate): Expanding (Advanced): Commanding: (Proficient)

8 ENL is a Civil Right ENL = English as a New Language (formerly known as English as Second Language) In 1974, in the class action suit Lau vs. Nichols (San Francisco) the Court ruled that school districts receiving federal funds must give students extra help to learn English so they can receive an equal education. The decision was based on the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the law Martin Luther King fought for on behalf of African Americans
