4 Measurement Basic to all science
Measure is when you compare an object to some standard quantity. Standard is called The International System of Units. (SI units) SI units are based on powers of 10.

5 Length Millimeter (mm) Centimeter (cm) Kilometer (Km)
Definition: the distance between two points SI unit of length: Meter (m) Sub Units are: Millimeter (mm) Centimeter (cm) Kilometer (Km) Tool of Measurement is Meter Stick or Metric Ruler

6 Common Conversions in Length
1m = 1000mm (very small unit) 1m = 100cm (small unit) 1000m = 1km (large unit)

7 Question??? 1. If you were measuring the distance between Lone Star and West Middle Schools, what length subunit would your probably use? (mm, cm or km) Answer: Kilometer (km) for a large length measurement.

8 Question?? 1. If you were measuring the length of your pencil, what measurement subunit would you probably report your answer in (cm, mm or km) Answer: probably centimeter (cm) for a small unit, but you could report in a very small unit millimeter (mm) too.

9 Practice using a Metric Ruler
1. Measure your Pen or Pencil to: A) Nearest centimenter (cm) B) Nearest millimenter (mm) 2. Measure the length and width of an index card in centimeters (cm) length Index Card l height

10 Length Lab In your notebook, title the next blank page “Length Lab”
Find 10 items around the room that you can measure to the nearest centimeter, tenth of a centimeter, and millimeter Item Nearest cm Nearest 0.1 cm Nearest mm
