1 Go through and highlight important information.
Prediction involves using seismometers to monitor earth tremors. Experts know where earthquakes are likely to happen. However, it is very difficult to predict when they will happen. Protection involves constructing buildings so that they are safe to live in and will not collapse. Rubber shock absorbers or base isolators are found in the foundation of the building to absorb the Earth tremors. Cross-bracing makes the structure stronger. Homework Go through and highlight important information. Produce a revision card on the outline. Answer the Exam question Preparation-In earthquake-prone countries, hospitals, emergency services and residents practice for an earthquake. They have drills in all public buildings so that people know what to do in the event of an earthquake. This helps to reduce the impact and increases their chance of survival. In Peru they use bamboo a flexible material that will bend in earthquakes. This is found growing everywhere is a very cheap material to use. In India they use a tractor to make a shake table where they can test different structure types. In Japan the national training day is held on 1st September each year. They choose this day as in 1923 an earthquake killed over 140,000 people. Monitoring volcanoes-Seismometers- used to measure earthquakes, a sign that an eruption could be happening soon. Tiltmeters and GPS Satellites- these devices monitor any changes in landscape. Volcanoes tend to start to swell so these swellings can be seen. America and Japan are world leaders in research into making buildings safer. In America they spent $1.08 billion and they employ 1,200 in their US Geological Survey- USGC. Monitoring gases escaping from a volcano using robots called spiders. There is normally an increase in Sulphur dioxide near an eruption. Temperature- volcanoes become hotter as the magma begins to rise.
