Phonics & Reading Meeting April 2018
2
What will we cover tonight. What is phonics
What will we cover tonight? What is phonics? How do we teach your child in nursery? How you can support your child at home?
3
What is phonics? Phonics is a method for teaching reading and writing the English language. The aim is to increase your child's ability to hear, identify, and manipulate letters and sounds. We will watch a training video by Ruth Miskin available on ‘You tube’ Parent Information: Understanding phonics.

What does RWI looks like in Nursery?
Children will only focus on speed sounds and phonics the term before reception. Before this, we will concentrate on reading stories and building enjoyment and vocabulary from this. Phonics should only be taught when the children can sit and focus for a period of time. 3x a week.
5
Reading stories and building sentences.
Reading to children is the best way to encourage them to love books and reading, sustain attention, and learn about people and places. Children love repetition. The same stories and rhymes can be used again and again with voices, actions, role play and joining in with rhyming. (Example) We can help build their vocabulary and imagination through building their own sentences and stories. (Example)
7
Phonics Stretchy sounds and bouncy sounds.
We are not using letter names or using capital letters. At this point, we are just naming the pictures. (Example) After half term, we will teach a sound a day. (Example)
8
How can you support this at home?
Handout on ‘tips for reading’. Visit and look at ‘downloads and videos’ section. After half term, use the speed sound book.
