Figure 1 The Ebola Virus (EBOV) Infects Multiple Organs: A Variety of Disease Symptoms in Humans. EBOV is transmitted via direct contact with droplets of bodily fluids from infected individuals or animals. After 2–21 days of incubation, EBOV disease manifests. EBOV achieves intracellular entry into many susceptible cell types, easily enters the blood circulation, and can target multiple organs of the body, including the brain, eyes, nose, mouth, throat, heart, lungs, muscles, liver, spleen, kidney, skin, digestive tract, and joints. The diagram highlights the severity and fatality of the disease, which stems from the consequences of multiple organ failure.
