Global Learning: Past vs. Present
This is our classroom now. This is what we grew up with… This was our classroom 2 years ago. We experienced the world thru globes, paper and pencil, and encyclopedias. Now: This is what today’s students are growing up with… Today we are a 1 to 1 school. So every student has a computer and the ability to connect globally Experiencing the world thru virtual reality, google expeditions, and blogs. It’s a whole new ball game! So HOW do we change the classroom to meet 21st century demands? This is question Mr. Arena and I asked ourselves last summer This was our classroom 2 years ago.

Unbounded Classroom Began with a grant to the Spartan Foundation
We wanted our students to know that the walls of the classroom do not confine their work It is important for our students to understand that they are globally connected: culture, people, places Provides the opportunity for students to travel to every continent without leaving the classroom Connect globally through VR and blogs (21 countries and counting) Students gain a deeper understanding of global friends and the cultures they live in What is Unbounded Classroom? Mr. Arena and I decided to write a grant to the Spartan Foundation for Best Buy’s Google Expedition VR Kit. The Spartan Foundation is a non profit organization that provides grants to teachers in the school district for the purpose of global education. The title of our grant was Unbounded Classroom! We wanted our students to know that the walls in this classroom do not confine our work to just the fourth-grade hallways of Blue Ball Elementary. It is important that our students understand that they live in a globally connected world and it is full of different cultures, people, and places. For many of our students, they will not have the opportunity to travel around the world. Through the use of VR, we can take our students to every continent without leaving the comfort of our classroom. Mr. Arena and I wanted to connect our students globally through the use of our class and student blogs. Our students are currently connected with 21 different countries from around the world. We can now visit these countries virtually and gain a deeper understanding of our global friends and the cultures they live in. <Website>

See Think Wonder Reflection Harvard Graduate School of Education
Application: When and where can I use it? When you want students to think carefully about why something looks the way it does or is the way it is. At the beginning of a new unit to spark interest Try it with an object that connects to a topic during the unit of study. At the end of a unit to encourage students to further apply their knowledge and ideas. Purpose: What kind of thinking does this routine encourage? This routine encourages students to make careful observations thoughtful interpretations helps stimulate curiosity sets the stage for inquiry think more deeply This past October I attended the PACIE conference in Philadelphia PA. A presenter spoke about having students use SEE, THINK, WONDER as a routine for higher order thinking skills.
