Good Day Automation in Testing By Girish S. Ranade Director, Futura Apsol Pvt. Ltd. Pune. 25th September 2006
2
Testing To ensure desired quality of an item.
By measuring selected parameters and comparing measured values against those specified. 25th September 2006
3
Cost of Testing Testing adds nothing to the product other than ‘confidence’, instead adds to the costs. But in absence of testing at various stages of product, cost to company is supposed to be 10 times at each stage. 25th September 2006
4
Testing is important for any manufactured item.
25th September 2006
5
Automation in Testing, advantages.
Enhances speed of Testing. Increases accuracy in testing. Deskilling. Data storage for analysis. Builds customer confidence. Programmability. Etc. 25th September 2006
6
Commonly Used Abbreviations
ATE : Automatic Test Equipment. ATS : Automatic Test System. UUT : Unit Under Test. E.g. Harness Under Test can be HUT. DUT : Device Under Test. 25th September 2006
7
Terms Used cycle time - The time duration from the start of one cycle to the start of the next. Fixture / Rig : Mounting of UUT. Connects UUT to the test equipment. Adaptation : Connection between tester and UUT. 25th September 2006
8
Basics of an ATE Testing is done by applying specified input/s to UUT and measuring output/s and comparing them with acceptable limits. Indicate results. 25th September 2006
9
Main Blocks of an ATE Connect input/s, Read / Measure outputs, Compare with programmed / stored data and display result. Switching / Isolation etc as required. Output/s measurement Input/s generator/s UUT on fixture. 25th September 2006
10
Input/s Generator/s Frequency Generator.
Power Supply, fixed or programmable. Electronic Load. VFD – Motor – Magneto for a 2 wheeler electric component. Air under pressure. Applied Force. 25th September 2006
11
Output/s Measurement Multimeter. Analog To Digital Converter.
Oscilloscope. Digital Inputs. Force Measurement. Time Measurement. Camera for vision. Etc. 25th September 2006
12
Brain / CPU / Controller
A PC, Industrial or commercial. An embedded system based controller. Simple digital and/or analog circuit. etc. 25th September 2006
13
Switching / Isolation A bank of relays, electromechanical or solid state. Analog or digital ‘switches’. Manual Switches. etc. 25th September 2006

Reference to Auto Industry
Customers expect 100% tested components. Components directly go to assembly line. Should be free from any defect. Traceability required. Vendor should increase customer confidence by adopting various methods in process. 25th September 2006
19
Hence component manufacturers expect…
Low cycle time. Reliable measurement / fault detection and reporting. Data storage. Online Label printing with date and time of passing a component for traceability. Marking on correct component. 25th September 2006
20
Hence component manufacturers expect…
Mistake proofing / Poka-Yoke by Holding a faulty component till authorised person releases. For a faulty component, next test cycle starts only after placing the component in faulty bin. Test report of faults. ‘Market decided’ features in future. 25th September 2006
21
Where ATEs are required
Pharma : Missing Tablets, Correct printing of name, batch etc. correct printing of ‘leaflet’. Etc. Food : Sorting quality of raw as well as finished items, correct filling etc. Automotive : All component testing etc. each and every industry. 25th September 2006
22
Summary Automation in Testing is important and essential for manufacturing industry. ATEs are programmable, intelligent system. ATEs can be configured as per requirements. 25th September 2006
