Mission, Vision, & Goals The McNair Scholars Program aims to fund and support first-generation, low income students, and/or underrepresented students preparing for their doctoral studies

Why pursue graduate school?
Opens more doors for opportunity in the field of higher education Participation in undergrad research Writing a research proposal Understanding the differences between research methods Attending conferences Allows for a connection with professors and peers Better navigation of your institution through the guidance of your mentors and peers

Benefits of Being a McNair Scholar
Individual academic planning and advising Full preparation for and help with the graduate school application process and fellowship application process Receive a $2,400 summer research stipend by being part of a summer research program either off-campus or on campus Faculty mentor Travel funding to Research 1 institutions and relevant conferences to present completed research Research Methods Course: UNV 395 Access to all McNair Scholars Program facilities and resources Lifetime McNair Scholar designation

Requirements and Time Commitments
The program is an intensive, year-long research program (includes summer) Expectations: Participate in all workshops, seminars, meetings, and classes Complete the UNV 395 Research Methods class (spring semester) Complete a summer research project under the guidance of a faculty mentor Present completed research project at CSUDH Student Research Day Maintain minimum 3.0 GPA Apply to a minimum of 6 graduate programs and minimum of 4 fellowships Maintain contact with CSUDH McNair Scholars Program for 10 years

Research is approved by faculty mentor Apply online: Select format presentation… Presentation Format: Oral Presentation Poster Presentation Roundtable Discussion Deadlines: Abstract – December 7th Supplemental Material – January 10th (only Oral)

When can I apply? Applications are due October 1, 2018 Eligibility:
Sophomore, junior, or senior (1 year remaining) status A U.S. citizen or permanent resident A first-generation college student who is ALSO low income (i.e., Pell Grant eligible) OR a member of a group under-represented in graduate study (African-American, Hispanic, Native American)
