1 The Wreck of the Titanic
By: Scott Jones

2 April 14, 1912 Captain Smith was speeding at 22 knots through icy waters Titanic hit iceberg at 11:40pm Iceberg hit Starboard side, flooding 6 compartments Ship broke in half as it sank Killed 1,517 passengers

3 How did it sink? Some scholars say that increased temperatures in the Caribbean led to a stronger Gulf Stream, which led to more icebergs than normal in the area between the Gulf Stream and the Labrador Current The rivets used in the bow of the ship were as high quality as those used in the middle of the ship, weakening the front. These rivets were also not hydraulically inserted The Labrador Current may have caused light to refract in abnormal ways, causing a mirage. The lookouts may not have been able to spot the iceberg until it was less than a mile away due to the mirage Ribbons of steel have been found, suggesting that instead of a simple hole in the side, the iceberg may have have separated the hull, causing a massive hole for water leakage Icy waters weakened the steel and caused it to crack

4 The Wreck Remains The Titanic was found 12,500 feet under the sea
The rudder is embedded in the sand, while the propeller is buried under ocean murk Ship slammed nose first into the ground, further burying the hull Bacteria and other sea life now inhabit the wreck 5,500 items were recovered from the wreck including portholes, pocket watches, shoes, rings, and hats

5 Expeditions The wreckage was found in 1985 of the coast of Newfoundland, more than 2 miles under the sea by Robert Ballard and Jean-Louis Michel James Cameron and Paul-Henry Nargeolet have also traveled to the wreck, bringing back high definition pictures and videos Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution created a highly detailed sonar survey of the area Human corpses still remain, as the wreck is their final resting place Artifacts on display in exhibits such as the Luxor hotel in Las Vegas

6 Bow of the Titanic Ocean life has now inhabited this vessel
