1 TOPIC 1:TECTONIC PROCESSES AND HAZARDS
89 TOPIC 1:TECTONIC PROCESSES AND HAZARDS (Lesson 13)

2 1. Why are some locations more at risk from tectonic hazards?
ENQUIRY QUESTION 1: 1. Why are some locations more at risk from tectonic hazards?

3 Previous lesson objectives
To describe and explain the global distribution of volcanic eruptions To be able to explain the causes of volcanic eruptions To be able to recognise which physical processes impact on the magnitude and type of volcanic eruption

4 Today’s lesson objectives
To understand what makes a volcano hazardous To be able to classify into primary hazards ( lava flows, pyroclastic flows, ash falls, gas eruptions) and secondary hazards(lahars, jokulhlaup)

5 What makes a volcano hazardous?

6 Proximity to people……..

7 WHITEBOARD Q: pyroclastic flows volcanic gases Lahars landslides
How many different volcanic hazards can you think of? Lava flows ash/tephra fall pyroclastic flows volcanic gases Lahars landslides tsunamis flooding Climate change Jokulhlaup

8 VOLCANOES!

9 WHITEBOARD QUESTION In pairs- 3 mins- think….

10 WHITEBOARD QUESTION

11 When a volcano erupts it can create many problems for the people living close by such as: -
Volcanic bombs and lava are blasted out from the cone damaging the surrounding area. 2. Millions of tonnes of lava engulf local villages and towns causing massive destruction and fires. 3. Damage to local farmland, trees and vineyards. 4. Local roads are blocked by lava flows. 5. Volcanic dust from the vent causes respiratory (breathing) problems. 6. Ash falls on buildings causing the roofs to collapse. 7. Electricity is cut-off to many local towns and villages. 8. Many deaths and injuries. 9. Many shops and businesses have to close, so people lose their jobs. 10. Water supplies, power lines, roads and bridges get badly damaged.

12 Montserrat, Caribbean 1995/1997 (Predominant volcanic hazards: Pyroclastic flows and ash)

13 The Eyjafjallajokull Volcano, Iceland 2010 ( Predominant volcanic hazards- ash and jokulhaup)
