NW Biology instructors Conference 2015 Vision, Voice and Change Mt Hood Community College Lisa Bartee, Wally Shriner, & Valory Thatcher VISION – Vision and Change can serve as a tool to provide legitimacy and structure to curricular change. MAIN GOAL– Adopt V&C Framework as a Vehicle for Strategic Change at the Division Level Photos should be at least 300dpi, but not more than 5-12 mgs each. Your poster is set to be enlarged 200% so do not change the page size to fit another poster size. Posters (3’ x 4’) will be printed at WWU using the same purchase order at the same time. Please your poster as a PPT file to by Joann Otto at WWU by April 20, Please contact Joann Otto with questions about poster printing. Also please put your institution “logo” on your poster. Please note that this template is provided to simplify your effort to prepare a poster for the NW Biology meeting. You can change the font size, colors, column widths, add photos, institutional logos, graphics, etc. This template can also be used as a starting point and you can be as creative as you want in your poster. However, we would like to have all of the posters the same size and we will be printed at the same time, at the same print shop in order to easily pay for printing with one purchase order. ACTIONS (& INTENTIONS ….) BARRIERS & CHALLENGES Gather and share V&C materials beyond Biology. V&C Framework is the first item on the Science Division strategic plan. We have applied for internal funding for incorporating V&C into non-majors (BI101) and majors biology (BI211, 212, & 213) We were joined by two colleagues at the NWBC Scientific Teaching workshop. One of our biggest challenges continues to be time and energy. Each science faculty member at MHCC teaches the quarterly equivalent of 5 courses. Getting everyone in the same room for a meeting is a major challenge. Modify V&C rubric for strategic program assessment. Move beyond simply having V&C on “the plan” to “seeing it” in our classrooms. STRENGTHS & LEVERAGE Products (& Reflections …) Our strengths include a high level of commitment to creating a better experience for students and a desire to make lasting change. Another “strength” is the size of our institution. Big enough to have a number of useful colleagues and small enough to effect change at a division level. Lesson Learned Products in progress… B A Reflection: The initial changes of introducing V&C have been relatively easy, in large part because we are “writing the first drafts.” To the extent that we personally invest in the initial stages of divisional strategic planning, we have a large influence on the conversations taking place. The real test will be when we move to incorporating the ideas into what is practiced in the classrooms of other instructors!
