What was your average daily Consumption of Water? The United Nations suggests that people need 30-50L of water per day to ensure their basic needs for drinking, cooking, and cleaning Think/Pair/Share: If you only had access to this amount of water, how would you use it? What activities would you prioritize? What activities would you cut?

Water Footprints

Water footprint Your water footprint is the amount of water you consume in your daily life, including the water used to grow the food you eat, to produce the energy you use and for all of the products in your daily life – your books, music, house, car, furniture and the clothes you wear.

Water footprints around the world

1. How does your water footprint as a Canadian compare with other parts of the world? What if anything surprises you about your water footprint? (refer to the map) 2. How does your direct water use compare to the embedded water used to create the foods you eat and the products you buy and use? 3. How aware do you think people in your regions are about how much water they use? How do you think this level of awareness compares to people around the world who collect their water by hand? 4. Do you think the amount of virtual water embedded in a product should be included on product labels? Whose responsibility is to monitor the amount of water used to produce goods? (governments, consumers, or manufacturers?) 5. How could today’s water consumption affect the water consumption of future generations? 6. Start, Stop, Continue! After conducting your personal water audit, what is something you should stop doing. What is something you could start doing, and what is something that you should continue doing? 7. Add the words virtual water, direct water, and water footprint to your glossary.
