1 Cellular Processes: Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration
Fall 2015

2 CELLS & ENERGY Why is energy necessary? move change shape
repair structure make new cell parts transport food expel wastes

3 ORGANISMS & ENERGY Sun is ultimate source of energy
Autotrophs – make own food Heterotrophs – eat other organisms Energy is obtained through Biochemical Pathways = linked or connected chemical reactions (product of one is reactant of another)

4 Important Bichemical Pathways
1. Photosynthesis- Light energy converted to chemical energy of organic compounds (carbs) Autotrophs ONLY 2. Cellular Respiration- Organic compounds broken down to create ATP Autotrophs AND Heterotrophs

5 PHOTOSYNTHESIS 6CO2 + 6H20 + solar energy C6H12O6 + 6O2
Occurs in leaves where chloroplasts are abundant

6 Capturing Light Energy
White light made of visible spectrum (different wavelengths)

7 Plants contain pigments (compounds that absorb light)
Chlorophyll – reflects green light (green leaves); uses red & blue Carotenoids – reflect yellow, orange, brown (fruits/flowers)

8 Converting Light Energy
3 STAGES 1. Energy captured from light 2. Energy used to make ATP & NADPH (high energy compound) 3. ATP & NADPH used to make carbohydrates from CO2

9 Factors that affect photosynthesis

10 CELLULAR RESPIRATION C6H12O6 + 6O2 6CO2 + 6H2O + energy
Process by which all organisms release energy stored in organic molecules

11 2 STAGES 1. Glycolysis: in cytoplasm, no energy or O2 needed Series of 10 reactions; a molecule of glucose is split into 2 identical smaller molecules called pyruvates; 2 ATP’s made

12 OR 2. Aerobic Respiration:
Occurs w/O2; in mitochondria of eukaryotes, cytoplasm of prokaryotes. Produces 36 ATP molecules OR 2. Fermentation: Absence of O2 Forms lactic acid (yogurt / cheese) or ethyl alcohol (beer / wine / bread)
