Basic Dictionary Overview
Below are some key features of the Basic Dictionary. Search in any of 30 Languages Search by Definition Search by Sound Search by Qualitative criteria such as Good/Bad and Less/More Display Interactive Graphs of Word Relationships Display Related Words, and not just Synonyms Display Word Complements such as Adjectives and Verbs matched to Nouns Display Extended and Wiktionary Definitions

Basic Dictionary – Initial Grid Before Search
Here is an initial display that starts with the beginning of the alphabet. There is a Quick Search and an Advanced Search. The drop down right of Advanced Search lets you select the language of the Advanced Search. Quick Search is in English and searches for a word. At the top left is a Select Language drop down to set the grid language.

There are Definitive and Qualitative search fields. We have set the search to find all words whose Definition contains ‘social’.

We click the Advanced Search button to launch the Search and here are the results. 1016 Words are found with the search term ‘social’ highlighted in yellow.

Now we decide to search and display results in Spanish. On the left we set the Grid to Spanish and on the right we set the Search to Spanish.

The grid, search, and results are now in Spanish including the column names. Now if we select Advanced Search again, we can enter our search term in Spanish.

We now search for ‘relación’ , but in the Alternative Definition field. We can search Definition, Alternate Definition, and Short Definition. If we search the Definition and also the Short Definition together, our search will look to satisfy both criteria. Similarly with other fields. Typically you would search the Definition field, but it’s good to know other options.

Here are the results for ‘relación’, but note that our search term doesn’t appear. This is because we aren’t currently including the Alternate Definition in Columns in the grid .

First, we click on the spyglass to view Word Detail and see our search term in yellow. We the Definition and the Alternate Definition. But all is in English, so See Next Page.

We click the Columns button and drag the Alternate Definition to the grid. As we select the field, the field name is also displayed in English.

The Alternate Definition is added to the grid and displayed in the selected grid language. It may take a bit of time searching the dictionary with Alternate Definitions and translating .

Basic Dictionary – Finding Complements
We often need adjectives and verbs that go with nouns. These are Complements. Let’s start a search to find words that complement ‘girl’ such as adjectives. We first set our grid to ‘girl’ by searching for ‘Word Equals ‘girl’ below.

The search returns five instances/definitions of the word ‘girl’. Since they are all the same word, click the View Complements info icon for one of them.

Finding Complements with Qualitative Fields
The search returns 2,147 complements of the word ‘girl’. Note that some are ‘Good’. Complements can have attributes like Good/Bad and Less/More. These are Qualitative Fields.

Finding Complements with Qualitative Fields
Let’s say we want Complements with ‘good’ implications. We’ll search Qualitative Fields. Qualitative fields are completed using numeric values such as 1 for Good as shown below. Hints are displayed when you hover over the value selection. You can also choose Equal, Contains, or other qualifier options using the drop-down. We choose Equal ‘1’.

Advanced Search with Qualitative Fields
Our results are 524 complements for ‘girl’ with an implication of ‘Good’ . If we click the Related Words info icon on one of the complements, we will get synonyms and other words related to it.

Basic Dictionary – Search by Sound and Rhyming
There are many types of rhymes. Below is an extract about rhyming from Wikipedia. Perfect rhymes Perfect rhymes can be classified according to the number of syllables included in the rhyme, which is dictated by the location of the final stressed syllable. single, also known as masculine: a rhyme in which the stress is on the final syllable of the words (rhyme, sublime) double, also known as feminine: a rhyme in which the stress is on the penultimate (second from last) syllable of the words (picky, tricky) dactylic: a rhyme in which the stress is on the antepenultimate (third from last) syllable (cacophonies, Aristophanes) General rhymes In the general sense, general rhyme can refer to various kinds of phonetic similarity between words, and to the use of such similar-sounding words in organizing verse. Rhymes in this general sense are classified according to the degree and manner of the phonetic similarity: syllabic: a rhyme in which the last syllable of each word sounds the same but does not necessarily contain stressed vowels. (cleaver, silver, or pitter, patter; the final syllable of the words bottle and fiddle are /l/, a liquid consonant.) imperfect (or near): a rhyme between a stressed and an unstressed syllable. (wing, caring) weak (or unaccented): a rhyme between two sets of one or more unstressed syllables. (hammer, carpenter) semirhyme: a rhyme with an extra syllable on one word. (bend, ending) forced (or oblique): a rhyme with an imperfect match in sound. (green, fiend; one, thumb) assonance: matching vowels. (shake, hate) Assonance is sometimes referred to as slant rhymes, along with consonance. consonance: matching consonants. (rabies, robbers) half rhyme (or slant rhyme): matching final consonants. (Roxie', Lexie) pararhyme: all consonants match. (tell, tall) alliteration (or head rhyme): matching initial consonants. (ship, short)

There are four main ways to Search by Sound in the Basic Dictionary . Let’s begin with the grid of over 2,000 Complements for ‘girl’ which Wordipedia provides. We’re showing only some of the columns, but note the Length and Good/Bad columns. As you saw before, we can search for Complements with a ‘Good’ or other implication. Keep this in mind for a bit.

We’re going back to show you Sound values for ‘girl’ so we can match with Complements. We’re going to add Columns to the grid with Sound Values for ‘girl’.

We clicked the Columns Button to Add sound values to the grid. Then we slid Soundex, Metaphone, and Phonetic Sound to the right, into the grid, and applied.

We now have 4 ways to match ‘girl’ with Complements that will Rhyme with ‘girl’. We can rhyme using Soundex, Metaphone, Phonetic Sound, and the word ‘girl’ itself. Jot down the values for these fields below. Also note the Rhymes column on the far right. We’ll click it first.

The iframe below the grid shows typical rhymes for ‘girl’ you get with most rhyme tools. But, do all of these have something to do with ‘girl’? They aren’t all Complements, just words that have a phonetic relationship to ‘girl’. But we want Complements for ‘girl’. Let’s see how.

We clicked to display Complements, and then added Sound Columns to the grid. Now we can find Complements of ‘girl’ that rhyme with ‘girl’, and we have 4 ways to do it.

We set the Advanced Search to find Complements meeting our needs. We’re going to find Complements that rhyme with ‘girl’ and also have a ‘good’ implication. We’ve set the search to find Complements ‘Ending in l’ with also a value of 1 for Good.

We find about 50 Complements of ‘girl’ that rhyme with ‘girl’ and have ‘good’ vibes. We could refine our search to get Complements whose Definition, Length, or other attribute was to our liking. Note that we can find Related Words such as synonyms for any of them by clicking Related Words. And, for any of the Related Words we can also match only those that rhyme with ‘girl’.

We do a totally different search to find Complements of ‘girl’ using the Metaphone field. We set our search to find Complements of ‘girl’ where Metaphone is Ending With ‘RL’ and removed the filter for Good/Bad. Let’s see the results on the next page.

We get quite different results. We can find Related Words to any of these also. We have many options in searching for Rhymes in the Basic Dictionary and other parts of Wordipedia.

Here are just some of the ways you can get meaningful rhymes with Wordipedia. First, click to find Complements of your word so your rhymes will be in context, then: Search for Complements using any of the Sound Fields or the word itself. Set the attributes of the field search to Start With, Contain, or End With any part or all of anything you want including characters of your word or its Sound Fields. Copy or jot them down. Refine your search using fields such as Definition, Length, or any of the Qualitative Fields. Once your search has found a Complement you are interested in, click Related Words and see more possibilities. You can further search Related Words with the same approach. Of course, you can always use automatic rhymes by clicking the View Rhymes icon on any Word, Complement, or Related Word. Remember the types of rhymes as discussed above from the Wikipedia definition. You can tailor your searches to find most types of rhymes in Complements that meet your requirements for meaning, length, and qualitative criteria. Your rhymes will be meaningful because they are in context with your word, they don’t just rhyme.

We’re going to search for words containing ‘philosophy’. We can use the drop-down to find words Equal, Starts With, or Ends With also. We can enter the word or any part of it and Wordipedia will find any matches.

To view an Extended Definition, click the Definition icon for a word. We click on the Definition icon for ‘Aristotelianism’. The Extended Definition displays in a iframe below the grid. The iframe scrolls vertically to view all its content.

Wordipedia uses iframes to display Wiktionary entries, graphs, etc. Below we have clicked the Wiktionary icon for aesthetics which appears also in an iframe. Note that hyperlinks are provided the same as viewing Wiktionary directly.

Clicking the Graph icon for ‘philosophy’ shows an interactive graph with several features. Please see the video on Wordipedia Graphics for a thorough discussion of the features and instructions for use.

Clicking the Related Words icon for ‘thought’ shows 442 words . Related Words include more than just synonyms. Note that you can View Complements for Related Words just as you did for Words. Also, you have many search options to pinpoint the Related Words you are most interested in.

Clicking the View Complements icon for ‘activity’ shows 3,451 Complements. As with Complements for Words, Complements for Related Words are also searchable with many options. And you can also view an Extended Definition, Wiktionary Definition, Graphs, Rhymes, and even words Related to Complements to get an even more extensive set of Complements.
