6+1 Writing Traits! Writing is made up of six main traits or qualities. These traits apply to every article, essay, story, or report you develop. The “+1” is all about presentation

IDEAS Effective writing has a clear message, purpose, or focus.
Well-chosen topic, main points, important details. Includes personal experience, topics important to you, things you know (when applicable) Is succinct and focused. Demonstrates a sense of planning.

ORGANIZATION Strong writing has a clear beginning, middle and end.
Easy to follow Logical sequence Interesting opening Good transitions Appropriate details Meaningful ending

VOICE The best writing reveals a writer’s voice and fits audience and purpose. Should reflect writer’s personality and/or unique perspective. Should suit the particular audience. Should suit the purpose.

WORD CHOICE Good writing contains strong words that deliver a clear message. Varied, elevated, appropriate vocabulary Active verbs Visual language: nouns to create pictures, descriptive adjectives and adverbs Words suit purpose and audience, reflect writer voice

SENTENCE FLUENCY Effective writing flows from one sentence to the next. Sentences vary in length Sentences begin in a variety of ways Rhythm and flow to the words

CONVENTIONS Quality writing is carefully edited to make sure it is easy to understand. Correct grammar and punctuation Proper paragraphing Correct spelling

PRESENTATION Resplendent writing looks neat and entices readers to want to read it. Follows guidelines for font, spacing, and margins Is attractive on the page
