Magnetism
2
What is Magnetism? What is a Magnet?
The force of attraction or repulsion caused by magnets An object that can attract other objects containing iron, cobalt or nickel Not all objects are attracted to magnets (glass, plastic, wood, paper) What is a Magnet?
3
Magnets 2 opposite poles: North Pole and South Pole BAR MAGNET
HORSESHOE MAGNET
4
Magnets Opposite poles attract Same poles repel
5
The Earth as a Magnet The earth is like a giant magnet
The geographic North Pole is the magnetic south pole GEOGRAPHIC NORTH MAGNETIC SOUTH GEOGRAPHIC SOUTH MAGNETIC NORTH
6
Which of the following metals would not make a very good magnet?
Iron Cobalt Aluminum Nickel
7
Which of the following would attract each other?
B. N S S N S N
8
Magnetic Fields A magnetic field is the area of space in which the magnetic force of a magnet can act on another magnet
9
Magnetic Field Lines Magnetic Field lines always move out of the North end and into the South end!!
10
Magnetic Field Lines of Interacting Magnets
Lines of Repulsion Lines of Attraction
11
Compasses and Magnets The magnet of a compass reacts to the Earth’s magnetic field to point to magnetic south, the geographic North Pole. The arrow of a compass is attracted to the South pole of a magnet and repelled by the North pole of a magnet.

Breaking a Bar Magnet
14
Determine the unknown pole
A. North B. South
15
Draw an arrow in the compass to show the direction of the magnetic field at those locations.
