Supreme Court Essay Format

Introduction This is usually used as the thesis statement (the sentence that expresses the main idea of a research essay). It should answer some key questions (who, what, where, when, why). Generally, the thesis statement can be the last line of the introduction paragraph.

Body The body should be the supporting paragraphs to the thesis statement. It can be used to address the key parts of writing a good Supreme Court essay. It should include the following: - Background of the case

Body (continued) - Court’s Ruling (it is the court’s final decision
Body (continued) - Court’s Ruling (it is the court’s final decision. Write the numbers final count (i.e., 6-3 majority ruling by the Court.) - Court’s Opinion (Majority Opinion) Write the majority opinion on the case.

What is a Majority Opinion
What is a Majority Opinion? It’s a judicial opinion agreed to by more than half of the members of a court. A majority opinion sets forth the decision of the court and an explanation of the rationale behind the court's decision.

Body (continued) - Write the Concurring Opinion What is a Concurring Opinion? It’s a written opinion by one or more judges of a court which agrees with the decision made by the majority of the court, but states different reasons as the basis for his or her decision.

Body (continued) Dissenting Opinion - Write the dissenting opinion of the Court. What is a Dissenting Opinion? A dissenting opinion is an opinion in a legal case written by one or more judges expressing disagreement with the majority opinion of the court which gives rise to its judgment.

Conclusion - Consequences of the decision Use the consequences of the decision for the conclusion. Write a summary of the consequences of the decision made by the court.

Conclusion Like the introduction statement, the thesis statement that was used should be restated and summarize with the main points of evidence from the body for the reader.
