Waves Vocab
2
Waves- a disturbance caused by a vibration that carries energy from one place to another.
Medium- is the matter that carries the wave Amplitude- refers to the height of a wave from rest position.
3
Frequency- the number of waves per second that pass a given point.
Transverse wave- the particles of the medium vibrate across the direction that the enrgy is traveling Longitudinal wave- the particles of the medium vibrate along the direction that the energy is traveling
4
Crest- where the displacement of the medium is at a maximum, upward.
Trough- where the displacement of the medium is at a minimum, downward. Wave length- the distance between successive crests of a wave, especially points in a sound wave or electromagnetic wave
5
Volume- An increase or decrease in a sound wave’s amplitude.
Pitch- An increase or decrease in a sound wave’s frequency. Brightness(intensity)- An increase or decrease in a light wave’s amplitude. Color- An increase or decrease in a light wave’s frequency. Refraction- a change in the direction of waves as they pass from one medium to another
6
New Terms Digital- refers to an electrical signal that is converted into a pattern of bits. Analog- a continuous signal that contains time- varying quantities Binary- a coding system using the binary digits 0 and 1 to represent a letter, digit, or other character in a computer or other electronic device.
