Waves, Sound, and Light
2
Key Ideas I will understand the relationship among waves, energy and matter. I will be able to describe the difference between transverse waves and compressional waves.
3
Vocab Words ( You will need to know these to be successful in 8th Grade and High School)
Wave Transverse Wave Electromagnetic Wave Mechanical Wave Compressional Wave
4
So, what exactly is a wave?
In your own words, write down what you think waves are here. Give it a shot and see how you do…. NO DON’T ASK ANYONE ELSE!!!! You are on your own!!!
5
Rhythmic disturbances that carry energy without carrying matter are called waves.
What is energy? Ability to do work. Work: movement of an object over a distance. The energy (of the people standing up) is transferred around the stadium, but the people themselves do not move very far at all.
6
Molecules transport wave energy without themselves moving, like a line of people passing a ball.
7
Mechanical waves use matter to transfer energy.
Transverse Wave – wave enegy causes matter in the medium to move up and down or back and forth at right to the wave angles
8
Example of mediums: Gases – Air Liquids – Water Solids – slinky
Medium - is a surrounding or enveloping substance. Example of mediums: Gases – Air Liquids – Water Solids – slinky
9
What is the medium in the picture below?
Compressional waves – Matter in the medium moves forward and backward in the same direction as the wave What is the medium in the picture below?
10
Sound Waves – Compressional waves caused by colliding air molecules.
Electromagnetic Waves – Transfer energy without transferring matter; produced by electrically charged particles.
11
Whiteboard Time 1) What are the different types of waves?
3) Draw a compressional wave 4) What is a medium. List 3 examples of mediums 5) Can a transverse wave be found in space? 2) Draw a transverse wave
