2 Counting Learn its It’s Nothing New Calculation

3 What is CLIC? Big Maths is a teaching programme used at St. Martin’s to help children to become numerate. Problem solving and word problems cannot be solved until children can manipulate and understand how numbers work. Big Maths lessons are fast. The children are introduced to child-friendly terms such as ‘Switchers’ and ‘Learn Its’, rather than ‘commutative law’ and ‘number bonds’ to help them manipulate numbers and make them more confident and more successful.

4 Counting Children count forwards and backwards in different multiples.
Read numbers of increasing size Partition numbers (place value) Order and compare number (< > =)

5 Learn Its 72 addition and multiplication facts
These are facts that children need to learn off by heart (instant recall). As soon as they know 3x5=15 they also know 5x3=15 (This is known as a ‘Switcher’).

6 Reception and KS1

7 KS2

8 It’s Nothing New Reminds children to use facts they already know
If you know = 8, then 5 tens + 3 tens = 8 tens, 5 cats + 3 cats = 8 cats. Build into measures such as ml and l, etc. Jigsaw numbers, Smile Multiplication and Where’s Mully

9 Finding the missing piece
Smile Multiplication 3 x 4 = 12 30 x 4 = 120 Jigsaw numbers Finding the missing piece 3 7 6 3 Totals 90 Total 10

10 Calculation This aspect of CLIC is when the teacher will work on developing the class’ progress and understanding of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

11 Monday to Thursday 20 minute CLIC sessions taught (5 minutes of each of the four areas) Covering the progression steps that the children are finding challenging TA used to teach a group Extra CLIC sessions for those who are falling behind

12 Challenges CLIC challenge Learn Its 10 questions (5 minutes)
Timed 90 seconds 2 steps before and the one the step your child is working on CLIC challenge 10 questions (5 minutes) Children must get 3 consecutive 10 out of 10 scores to achieve this CLIC challenge.

13 Help your child practice their Learn Its at home
Big Maths is a very useful tool to help children become numerate… but we still need your support at home. How can you help? Help your child practice their Learn Its at home Insist that numbers are written the correct way round Congratulate your child if their Big Maths score goes up. Make maths a positive experience (don’t tell your child you were rubbish at maths when you were at school – they will think they should be!)
