3. CONSEQUENCES (3) Martin was not around to help rescue Columbus and his sailors from the wreckage of the Santa Maria on 24 Dec 1492 Columbus and Vicente only had one ship left due to Martin’s disappearance – the Nina Not all the men could thus fit on the Nina and 39 men had to be left behind Columbus and men left Hispaniola to return to Spain earlier than planned due to the wreckage and only having one ship available 3. CONSEQUENCES (3) Columbus did not have enough room aboard the Nina to house the men from the Santa Maria who were now stranded Columbus had to leave 39 men behind Columbus had to make an agreement with the chieftain to build a settlement to house the men he was leaving behind La Navidad was built 1. WHO WAS MARTIN PINZON? (3) CAPTAINED THE Pinta – one of the 3 ships on the voyage Brother to Vicente Pinxzon – captain of the Nina Martin and his brother were the main reason behind the sponsorship of the first voyage He was an experienced sailor and navigator 2. PINZON’S ACTIONS – (3) Disobeyed Columbus’s order in November 1492 Distrust grew between the two men as a result He sailed off from San Salvador to the island of Babeque in search of gold He found no gold and so sailed to Hispaniola – arriving on 5 December 1493 a short distance from Columbus unbeknown to him He had no contact with Columbus and his brother until January when he accidently reunited with them on route back to Spain 1. BACKGROUND OF SHIP (3) Captained by Columbus One of the 3 ships on the first voyage The biggest ship out of the 3 2. WHAT HAPPENED? (3) 24 December 1492 the Santa Maria was driven ashore and sank in a bed of coral reefs Columbus an his men were on board Vicente – Martin’s brother and the captain of the Nina – had to rescue Columbus and his men from the wreckage The ship was totally destroyed and unable to be repaired – leaving only 1 ship available to sail back to Spain MARTIN PINZON SANTA MARIA SHIP 5. EXPLAIN THE LINK TO THE SANTA MARIA WRECKAGE Martin’s actions directly contributed to Columbus’s decision after the wreckage to est La Navidad 4. EXPLAIN THE LINK TO LA NAVIDAD Martin’s disappearance meant Columbus had to leave 39 men behind and establish a settlement for the men to live in - no room on the Nina! 5. EXPLAIN THE LINK TO MARTIN PINZON Martin and his ship the Pinta were missing when the wreckage happened so Columbus had to leave men behind Columbus gave up on ever reuniting with Martin and so sailed back early to Spain leaving the men behind 4. EXPLAIN THE LINK TO LA NAVIDAD The wreckage meant that Columbus had to leave men behind because he only had 1 ship – the Nina – left to sail back to Spain La Navidad was built using the wooded planks salvaged from the wreckage of the Santa Maria
