1 “You cannot expect what you do not model.”

2 What is Service as Action?
SA is a required component of IBMYP and its aim is to develop internationally minded individuals who can recognize their shared common humanity and responsibility to take care of the planet. A secondary but just as important goal of SA is to connect what is learned in school to the real world. The ultimate aim as a school and community is to create life-long memories and experiences that lay the foundation for future learning.

3 What problem do you want to solve in your community?

4 Core Characteristics of Service
1. Meaningful Content 2. Voice and Choice 3. Personal and Public Purpose 4. Assessment and Feedback 5. Resources and Relationships

5 What is a good service activity?
Meets a need. Is something you care about. Is something where you understand the issue or problem. Involves other people. Has a responsible adult supervisor who understands that activity and is able to comment on your participation. Enables you to meet the learning outcomes. You will need 20 hours.

6 The goal of S&A is to meet the S&A learning outcomes.
Increase awareness of your own strengths and areas for growth You are able to see yourself as an individual with various skills and abilities, some more developed than others, and understand that you can make choices about how you wish to move forward. Undertake challenges that develop new skills Challenges and new skills may be those not previously undertaken or acquired, or those that extend your existing expertise. Discuss, evaluate and plan student-‐initiated activities The planning and initiation of an activity should involve a discussion and evaluation of objectives, responsibilities and expectations. These steps are often completed in collaboration with others, and are shown best through S&A projects. Work collaboratively with others Collaboration can be shown in many different activities, including working with coaches, adults and other students. Persevere in action At a minimum, this implies showing determination and commitment by attending activities regularly and accepting a share of the responsibility for dealing with problems that arise in the course of activities. Develop international-‐mindedness through global engagement, multilingualism and intercultural understanding This can mean being involved in international projects, but there are many global issues that can be acted upon locally or nationally (e.g. environmental concerns, caring for the elderly). Consider the ethical implications of your actions Ethical decisions arise in almost any S&A activity (e.g. by considering who will and who will not benefit from your actions).
