Specific: “5 W’s” questions What: What do I want to accomplish?
Why: Specific reasons, purpose or benefits of accomplishing the goal. Who: Who is involved? Where: Identify a location. Which: Identify requirements, constraints Note: Who includes other people to help and motivate you—discussed in A: action plan When will be addressed T: timely

Measurable: How much? How many?
How will I know when it is accomplished? Must be a number Can be a monetary amount, a quantity, a time measurement—anything that can be stated numerically

Action plan: How can the goal be accomplished
How many steps (actions) do I need? What are the specific steps? What resources do I need? Which people can assist me?

Realistic: How does this goal fit in with my life plan?
How will this be accomplished? Can I really do this in the time frame allowed? What do I need to consider? Money? Other resources? Permissions?

TIMe-Bound When will this be accomplished?
Deadline, a defined date State when can each step be completed? What can I do today?

SMART Goal Examples Bad Better Best I want to be rich someday.
I want to retire at age 40 with $1 million dollars in savings. Best By age 40, I want to retire with $1 million dollars in my investment portfolio by buying my dads insurance agency and growing it to several offices.

SMART Goal Examples Bad Better Best I will get good grades.
I want a 4.0 GPA. Better I want to earn a 4.0 this semester by studying at least 45 minutes every weeknight. Best I want to earn a 93% or better this semester in Algebra by studying every weeknight and completing all homework.

More SMART Goal Examples
I will type 3 words faster per minute, reaching 24 GWAM by keeping all fingers down on my home row by this Friday. By Friday, Feb. 18th, I will have 2 fewer keyboarding mistakes by focusing on my third (ring) fingers making them rest at the home row and reaching other keys accurately.

Formula for SMART Goals
I will/want (specific goal) to achieve (measurement—must have a Number) by doing (action plan) by (date: timeline). Double check that it is realistic: Ask can I really achieve this in this amount of time? Does this fit with my larger goals, my vision for my future?
