1 Longitude and Latitude Lines
Understanding “Place” and How to Communicate It

2 Story about a place… Once upon a time there were large areas of land out west. There was an event called the Oklahoma Land Run of 1889 that allowed people to purchase land ahead of time, and then go stake their claim on the land they wanted. One man by the name of O.W. Gurley wanted to stake his claim as well. He did so, and the land became known as Greenwood in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The land was settled and lots of people moved there, building businesses and schools. The people who lived there became very wealthy and the area became known as “Black Wall Street.”

3 Here are some of the business owners who founded the town:

5 Businesses Schools Streets

6 Some people became upset with the town because it was doing so well.
In 1921, riots led to the city burning down and there was a massacre of people who lived there. Survivors wanted to rebuild the town…

7 CONSIDER THIS: If you were to help rebuild the town, how would you communicate to people where things should go? Would you draw a picture/map? How would people get to the place where they would build on this map? How might you communicate “place?”

8 Tulsa, Oklahoma

9 What would they want to communicate if they were making a map themselves?
Vocabulary Absolute location: exact location of a place Lines of latitude (or parallels): lines that run east and west. Lines of longitude (or meridians): lines that run north and south from the poles.
