There was a clash of ideas during this time. The Bible fundamentalists were fighting with those who believed in modern thinking. The biggest clash was the “Scopes Trial” Tennessee had outlawed the teaching of evolution in science classes. John Scopes taught it anyway and was arrested and put on trial. Prohibition was adopted in 1920. It was the 18th Amendment. The Fundamentalists won this round. The manufacture, transportation and sale of alcohol was made illegal. New Words in the vocabulary: Volstead Act – The prohibition law Bootlegger – People who smuggled liquor Speakeasy – An illegal bar

Other Problems of the Day
Immigration still bothered people. Emergency Quota Act 1921 National Origins Act 1924 Immigration Act 1924 All put limits on Southern and Eastern Europeans. Social Mores – The moral attitudes of the day were changing. Some people didn’t like this.
